The municipal fire department, Kvam brann- og redningsteneste, is responsible for the crucial first tier within rescue services, and is responsible for both preventative work and emergency response.
The fire department is led by the fire chief (brannsjef), who also serves as department manager for emergency preparedness in the municipality. He is also responsible for preventive efforts, as well as for the chimney sweeping service, which is currently provided by Vestnorske feiertenester AS.
To meet legal requirements for fire preparedness, Kvam has fire stations in Øystese, Norheimsund and Oma. Additionally, the municipality has a cooperation agreement with with the industrial disaster prevention team of Elkem Bjølvefossen, stationed in Ålvik.
