A new Data Protection Act came into effect in Norway in 2018. It has two main elements:
- It includes the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Norwegian law
- It provides a number of regulations complementing the regulations of GDPR
The new Act adapts and tightens the regulations for handling personal data within public and private sectors, providing citizens with strengthened privacy. The new regulations in GDPR apply to everyone operating within the European Union and the European Economic Area (EEA), the latter to which Norway belongs, and to anyone offering goods or services to EU/EEA residents.
